River Management

Management of the Murray River is an example of how aerial imagery is helping to manage the health of the river. The Murray extends for over 2,500 kilometres. Trying to manage the various aspects of the river, such as: flow; usage; salinity; algal blooms; and other water quality aspects is involved and very time consuming. More critically, the time to respond to emergency situations that could affect public health is extremely limited, with only a few hours to react in certain cases.

Currently the Water Quality department in SA Water commissions the capture of high definition video and still imagery of the South Australian section of the Murray. Regular captures are helping SA Water have confidence in the monitoring and management of the river. Nonetheless, analysts require a full day to process data from a single run.

Aerial Analyst integrates captured video and still footage together with an interactive map and the ability to compare with prior runs. Furthermore it processes the footage to generate indicators requiring action. A business logic layer helps analysts assign and track issues through to resolution. This integration helps analysts and decision makers to process and action an entire section of the river within an hour of receiving captured data.
